Longtemps consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme l’un des plus grands joueurs de l’histoire \u00e0 ne pas avoir remport\u00e9 de tournoi majeur, l’Allemand de 29\u00a0ans disputait \u00e0 New York sa troisi\u00e8me finale d’affil\u00e9e en Grand Chelem, apr\u00e8s son titre \u00e0 Paris et sa d\u00e9faite \u00e0 Wimbledon contre le N\u00b01 mondial Jannik Sinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ce premier titre \u00e0 l’US Open est aussi une belle revanche pour le colosse hambourgeois (1,98\u00a0m\u00e8tre), six\u00a0ans apr\u00e8s une d\u00e9faite d\u00e9chirante \u00e0 New York\u00a0o\u00f9 il disputait alors sa premi\u00e8re finale de Grand Chelem. Dans un stade Arthur-Ashe vid\u00e9 par la pand\u00e9mie de Covid-19,\u00a0Zverev, \u00e2g\u00e9 de 23\u00a0ans, avait \u00e9t\u00e9 renvers\u00e9 en cinq manches par l’Autrichien Dominic Thiem<\/a> apr\u00e8s avoir men\u00e9 deux sets \u00e0 rien et \u00eatre pass\u00e9 \u00e0 deux points du sacre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Une d\u00e9faite qui avait \u00e9t\u00e9 suivie de deux autres d\u00e9sillusions, en finale de Roland-Garros contre Carlos Alcaraz en 2024, et en finale de l’Open d’Australie contre Jannik Sinner en 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zverev en ma\u00eetrise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Battu par Shelton en quarts de finale, Alcaraz a effectu\u00e9 \u00e0 New York son retour sur le circuit apr\u00e8s plus de quatre mois d’absence pour blessure, tandis que Sinner \u00e9tait forfait \u00e0 New York car touch\u00e9 au genou droit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c0 l’image de sa carri\u00e8re, Zverev est revenu de loin pour s’imposer \u00e0 Flushing Meadows, apr\u00e8s une tourn\u00e9e nord-am\u00e9ricaine cahoteuse et un d\u00e9but de quinzaine poussif. Aux deux premiers tours, il avait eu besoin de cinq sets pour se d\u00e9faire de l’Italien Lorenzo Sonego (89\u1d49) puis du Fran\u00e7ais Quentin Halys (52\u1d49).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sur le Central, l’Allemand a affich\u00e9 une ma\u00eetrise presque totale d\u00e8s le d\u00e9but de la finale quand Shelton, sans doute pris par l’enjeu, a l\u00e2ch\u00e9 son service d’embl\u00e9e sur une double faute avant de brader la premi\u00e8re manche sur une autre double faute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zverev a ensuite d\u00e9roul\u00e9 dans le tie-break dans la deuxi\u00e8me manche, avant de l\u00e2cher un peu de lest dans le troisi\u00e8me set, qui a permis \u00e0 Shelton de remonter \u00e0 deux manches \u00e0 une.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mais, \u00e0 l’exp\u00e9rience, Zverev a break\u00e9 d’embl\u00e9e puis serr\u00e9 le jeu jusqu’au bout, pour remporter le match en 3 h 33 sur un service gagnant, sans m\u00eame se rendre compte qu’il venait de d\u00e9crocher le titre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ce premier sacre \u00e0 l’US Open place celui qui n’a jamais occup\u00e9 la t\u00eate du classement mondial \u00e0 un peu moins de 2 000 unit\u00e9s du N\u00b01 mondial Jannik Sinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
